After a medical history and possible hormone optimization, a treatment plan for hair loss is developed. PRF vs. PRP

Although both PRF and PRP contain growth factors, there are a few differences between how these two treatments work and how they’re prepared:

PRP is spun at a higher speed. To make either PRP or PRF, the blood sample is spun at a high speed so that the heavier components fall to the bottom of the container and the lighter components (e.g. the plasma and platelets) remain at the top. This way, it’s easier to separate the plasma and platelets when it’s time to do so. PRF carries more healing factors than PRP, so to ensure that the individual cells aren’t damaged in the process, PRF is processed at a slower speed.
PRF usually has a higher platelet count. Because PRP is spun so quickly, many of the platelets get left out of the final product. Even so, the number of platelets is still much higher when compared to normal, un-spun blood.
PRF releases platelets and growth factors slowly. One of the biggest differences between PRP and PRF is the release time. Once injected, PRP releases its platelets and growth factors quickly, while PRF releases the goods slowly.

PRF Treatment for Hair Loss

PRF hair restoration therapy is simple. Before the treatment, the patient’s blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge (see above). Then, the PRF is injected into the patient’s scalp. There’s no downtime and the patient is free to leave immediately after the procedure.

Fortunately, there’s very little prep work involved. Just book an introductory consultation at one of our locations, in Petoskey, Traverse City, or Naples, and one of our providers will assess your hair loss and discuss any concerns to ensure the treatment is right for you. PRF works best for patients who are experiencing early stages of hair loss.

Treatment Day

On the day of your treatment, you’ll need to come to the office well-hydrated (it makes it easier to draw your blood). When you arrive, we’ll draw your blood. While the blood is being spun and PRF is being prepared, we may inject a local anesthetic, which makes the procedure virtually pain-free. Once the PRF is ready, it’s injected into the areas on your scalp where your hair is thinning the most.

You can leave immediately after the procedure. Best results are seen in a series of three treatments spaced three to six weeks apart, so we may ask if you’d like to book another treatment session before you go.

After Treatment

PRF Hair Treatments take about 45 minutes start to finish and there are no other restrictions. You may want to bring a cap to wear right after treatment. Once you get home, you’re free to wash and style your hair as usual after PRP and PRF injections for hair loss. Results are gradual. Most patients report visible results from hair loss injections after their second treatment with best results at 6-9 months.
